Abraham Ancer claims maiden PGA Tour title with a dramatic playoff victory at WGC-FedEx Invitational
Abraham Ancer won his first PGA Tour title after defeating Hideki Matsuyama and Sam Burns in a playoff.
The 30-year-old Mexican golfer went 2-under in the final round to finish the tournament at 16-under par, but his victory came after a lot of stress as Matsuyama and Burns put up a solid fight.
2021 Masters Champion Hideki Matsuyama played a sensational round of 7-under to sit along Ancer. While Sam Burns, who was at 10-under before the commencement of the final day, posted a brilliant 6-under to reach 16-under.
After finishing their four day total at 16-under, the trio was required to play a playoff to claim victory, in which Abraham Ancer beats Hideki Matsuyama and Sam Burns with a 6-foot birdie putt on the second hole of a playoff.
"It was a dream come true to win on the PGA Tour," Ancer said.
Harris English, the leader of the first three rounds, was playing steady even thru the first nine holes, but he faltered in back nine with one bogey and two double bogeys to finish the event at the solo-fourth position.
"I played good on the front nine and just kind of hit a road bump on 11," he said. "I got the wind [reading] wrong, and it kind of went downhill from there."
Daniel Berger, Paul Casey and Cameron Smith shared the tied-fifth position after finishing the event at 14-under 266.
