Gary Player believes Anirban Lahiri can win a major for India

Golf legend Gary Player at the press conference of the inaugural DGC Open has lavished praise on India’s International star Anirban Lahiri.
The nine-time major winner, Gary, who is in Delhi for this week, said that Anirban’s runner-up finish at the fifth most prominent golf tournament in the world 'Players Championship' just shows that India is not very far from having a Major winner.
Lahiri, an 18-time professional championship winner, finished in a tie for second place at The Players Championship on March 14, 2022, earning a career-high USD 2.18 million.

"Lahiri's performance was such an amazing effort against all the best players in the world. He finished second in the fifth most important tournament and I wonder if the Indian population realise the publicity that he got for India is quite remarkable.”

"If Lahiri can finish second at The Players, he can definitely win a Major, no question and what a happy day it would be for me to see an African or a person from India winning a Major."
Gary Player can’t stop at that he further praised golf infrastructures in India, the standard of play, suitable course environment and supportive climate.
He said, "It [An Indian Major winner] is coming, because you have the standard of play, you have good golf courses, good climate, it can happen," he said.
"To become a champion, you have to be a different kind of person. You got to be dedicated, you got to live it morning, day and night and not many people are prepared to be that."
Anirban's tie for fifth at the 2015 PGA Championship, had been the previous best result for an Indian at a major.
