Patrick Cantlay defeats Bryson DeChambeau in six-hole playoff to win BMW Championship
Patrick Cantlay defeated Bryson DeChambeau in a sudden-death playoff to win the BMW Championship on Sunday.
Both Cantlay and DeChambeau entered Sunday’s final round tied for the lead at 21-under, and both finished at 27-under, forcing a playoff to determine the champion.
The playoff was extended to six holes and finally ended when Cantlay birdied the sixth playoff hole to clinch the second leg of the FedEx cup playoffs.
The 29-year-old Cantlay, with this win, moved to the top of the FedEx Cup standings.
He will begin this week’s Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta at 10-under, a two-stroke advantage over Tony Finau, the winner of the playoff’s first leg at The Northern Trust.
Bryson DeChambeau, who entered the final 18th hole ahead by one stroke, missed a birdie putt while Cantlay made his from outside 20 feet to force a playoff in which Cantlay outlasted DeChambeau.
DeChambeau's second-place result, though, moved him up to the third position in the FedEx Cup standings, allowing him to start the final leg at 7-under par. Tony Finau, who won The Northern Trust last week, will start the TOUR Championship at 8-under.
Dustin Johnson, who won the FedEx Cup last year, finished his BMW Championship campaign tied for the sixth position, and he will start the final tournament seven strokes back at 3-under.
The TOUR Championship is set to begin Thursday, Sept. 2, at the East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta.
