Phoenix Open: Scottie Scheffler beats Patrick Cantlay in playoff to claim maiden PGA Tour title
Scottie Scheffler won the Phoenix Open after smashing a birdie on the third extra playoff hole to claim his maiden PGA Tour title on Sunday.
It was a nail-biting final round at the TPC Scottsdale, where the current heartthrob of golf lovers Patrick Cantlay, who was three strokes clear of Scottie Scheffler after the opening nine holes, finished runner-up at the PGA Tour $8,200,000 prize money event.
Scheffler, who was nine-shot back of the lead after the midway stage, had a super solid third round in which he posted 9-under 62 followed by another steady 4-under 67 on the final day to force a playoff; and then finally won the title.
On the back-nine, Scheffler, who was at 12-under 236 thru 63 holes, smashed five birdies against one bogey to finish at 16-under 268. Cantlay, on the other hand, only managed to hit one birdie that squandered his 3-shot advantage to force a playoff.
Following the exciting final round, the audience witnessed another dramatic spectacle in the playoff as well, as both players battled it out until the third extra playoff, where Scheffler clinched the victory with a birdie.
Sahith Theegala, an Indian-American who led after the second and third rounds, had a dismal final round of 1-under 70, finishing one shot behind the winner at 15-under 269.
Another man in contention before the commencement of the fourth & final round was the 4-time major champion Brooks Koepka, whose last PGA victory came at the same event, shot 2-under 69 to end at tied-3rd alongside Sahith.
