Rickie Fowler, John Catlin receive special invites to 2021 PGA Championship

Rickie Fowler and John Catlin received special invitations to next month's PGA Championship; the officials confirmed the news on Tuesday.

The PGA of America confirmed to NBC Sports' Will Gray on Tuesday that Fowler and John Catlin have each received special invites to play the PGA Championship on May 20-23 at Kiawah's Ocean Course.

The PGA said that both the talented golfers had been invited to play "based on their performances, playing records, and OWGR position."

The 30-year-old Catlin won his third European Tour title last week on the fifth playoff hole at the Austria Golf Open. That win moved him to No. 79 in the world; and earned him an invitation to the PGA Championship.

Fowler has recorded just two top-10s in 29 starts across 2020 and 2021 in this free-fall to outside the top 100. He also missed last month's Masters Tournament; his first missed major since the 2010 U.S. Open. Still, the mighty man received the invitation based on his exceptional past performances.
