Rory McIlroy ends victory drought with Wells Fargo title
Rory McIlroy carded a decent 3-under to win the Wells Fargo Championship on Sunday for his first PGA Tour title in nearly two years.
Starting the final round 2-shots behind, McIlroy had four birdies against one bogey to grab his 19th career title by one shot at the Quail Hollow.
McIlroy believes the return of spectators after the Covid-19 ban helped to drive him to victory in North Carolina.
"It's awesome to play in front of these people again. When we came back from the pandemic, I thought I would enjoy the peace and quiet a little bit." - said McIlroy after winning the Wells Fargo for the third time.
Mexico's Abraham Ancer was second on 275 after a closing 66, with Norway's Viktor Hovland and American Keith Mitchell sharing third on 276 and 2019 US Open champion Gary Woodland fifth on 277.
"The world is a completely different place from what it used to be with everyone going through the pandemic," he told CBS television.
He further added "Life has changed a lot for me now, being a dad and winning on Mother's Day, thinking of Erica and my mum back home. This is one of my favorite places in the world - to break the drought by winning here again is awesome."
In 10 career starts at the Wells Fargo, the 32-year-old McIlroy has three wins, a share of second, and eight top-10 finishes.
