Sentry Tournament of Champions: Cameron Smith shoots opening-round 65 to set pace at Kapalua Plantation

Cameron Smith played an exceptional round of 8-under 65 to set up the pace at the first PGA Tour event of 2022.
The Australian golfer, who started his campaign with a par-bogey, shot a birdie on the third hole and then made no errors in the remaining 15 holes as he smashed four birdies and two eagles to grab a one-stroke lead at the Sentry Tournament of Champions.
A pack of three talented golfers, including the World No. 1 Jon Rahm, was just a stroke behind Smith at the winners-only tournament being played at the Kapalua Plantation Course.
Apart from Smith, Patrick Cantlay also shot an eagle in his opening round to share the tied-2nd with Jon Rahm, who had a flawless 7-under 66, and Daniel Berger (66).

South-African golfer Erik Van Rooyen, who scored 1-under 36 on the front-nine, shot five birdies in his remaining nine holes to end day one campaign at the tied-5th place. Joining him at fifth were Kevin Na and Sungjae Im.
2021 PGA Championship winner, Phil Mickelson, shot 2-under 71 in the no-cut event to tie for 25th place with Jordan Spieth and two others heading into the second round.
Pre-tournament favourite Justin Thomas posted a decent 1-over 74 to sit at tied-36th spot alongside Patrick Reed and Lucas Glover.
