Shankar Das, Travis Smyth share first-round lead at DGC Open

The veteran Indian golfer Shankar Das impressed everyone with a solid 5-under 67 on day one of the DGC Open to share the opening-round lead with Travis Smyth.

Das, who left all speechless through his solid game technique on the first day, smashed six birdies against a single bogey to score 5-under 67 at the PGTI & Asian Tour co-sanctioned event being played at Delhi Golf Club.

Australian golfer Travis Smyth had an influential day at work too, as with a blistering 5-under 67, he kept himself in a strong position.

Smyth, who did not use his driver the entire day due to the tightness of the newly constructed golf course, began his round with two consecutive birdies before making a bogey on the par-5 third hole.

He made five pars and a birdie on the final six holes of the first nine.

Smyth continued to make steady progress through 10 to 13 holes until making a spectacular eagle on the 14th, followed by three straight pars and a birdie on the 18th to finish the day at 5-under 67.

The seasoned Das, on the other hand, was going flawless before making a mistake that resulted in a bogey on 10th, he quickly rebounded, scoring a birdie on the 11th, a par on the 12th, and another birdie on the 13th, followed by successive pars to share first place.

The Gary Player designed Lodhi Golf Course of the DGC is known to be one of the toughest golf courses in the world.

Local boy Veer Ahlawat also had a good round one, as with a strong 4-under 68, he was just one shot behind the lead. Joining him at second was Nitithorn Thippong of Thailand.
