Shubhankar Sharma narrowly misses third European Tour title, finished tied-2nd at HSBC Championship
Shubhankar Sharma couldn’t have come closer to being crowned the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on Sunday, with a mis-hit on second last hole seeing him ultimately miss out on the acme by just one stroke.
Sharma finished tied for second at the challenging Yas Links in Abu Dhabi after carding a one-under 71 in the final round.
It was a breathtaking day for all the supporters and many golf fanatics, especially in India - as Shubhankar started the final round in a tie for fourth place, three strokes behind the leader Scott Jamieson.
The 25-year-old had a roller-coaster first nine holes, in which he managed to shoot two birdies against one bogey and one double bogey. He began his back-nine campaign with a birdie on the tenth, followed by three pars, and another birdie, followed by two more pars, before making a small error on the 17th and making bogey.
Shubhankar then, on the final hole, needed an eagle to force a playoff; he shot a birdie missed and his chance of winning the third European Tour title (now DP World Tour) by only one stroke.
Though Shubhankar was all happy after his campaign as he took to his Twitter and wrote, “I am happy to start my year on the DP World Tour, the way I did this week. Felt great, played solid!
I have some great feeling for the year ahead, the way my game, body and mind are feeling at the moment. Let's take a fun ride together. Hope today inspires some more kids back home.”
Thomas Pieters won the tournament despite shooting an even-par 72 in the final round, courtesy to his first-round 7-under and third-round 5-under, which offset his second-round 2-over and final-day even-par, as he won by a single shot.
With a tournament total of 9-under 279, Rafa Cabrera-Bello of Spain ended his run at tied for second place with Shubhankar.
