Viktor Hovland outshines top pros to win Hero World Challenge
Viktor Hovland won the prestigious Hero World Challenge at Albany Golf Course with a six-under-par 66 to finish the tournament with a 270 total, 18-under par, and a winning margin of one-stroke over his closest challenger, the American Scottie Scheffler, who also finished with a 66.
The young Norwegian, who was six shots behind the lead before the commencement of the final round, played some exceptional game of golf to emerge victorious at the tricky playing conditions.
Hovland (68-69-67-66) started his final day journey with five back-to-back even pars, then he made three consecutive birdies and ended his front nine at 3-under.
On the back nine, he smashed birdie on the 11th, made a small error and shot bogey on the 12th, but the major turning point occurred on the 14th and 15th; where he hit two consecutive eagles and climbed up to tie for first alongside Scheffler with three holes to go.
Scottie Scheffler gave tough competition to Viktor as he struck six birdies on the back nine and needed an eagle to win or a birdie to play a playoff, but he was unable to convert and finished solo second.
The world No.2 Collin Morikawa, who entered the final day with a big five-shot lead, had a disastrous fourth round to finish at a tied-5th place.
Two double bogeys on the first nine holes majorly trashed his chances as his two birdies on the back nine won’t help him to regain the top position again.
The day’s low round belonged to former World No. 1 Justin Thomas, who carded a spectacular 8-under 64 to finish at tied-5th alongside Morikawa.
