Yuvraj Singh Sandhu holds off Viraj Madappa to win Players Championship 2022
The young gun Yuvraj Singh Sandhu once again proved his mettle on the professional event after carding an electrifying 4-under 66 to claim a one-shot victory at the Players Championship.
Chandigarh-based Yuvraj, who was the leader by three shots before the commencement of the final round, impressed everyone on the final day, especially his eagle shot on the 16th that left all stunned at the star-studded Rs.50 Lakh prize money event.
Twenty-five-year-old Yuvraj carded 21-under 269 in his four-day campaign with the help of twenty-seven birdies and one eagle against eight bogeys to create a record of the lowest winning total at the Tollygunge Golf Club in Kolkata.
Viraj Madappa (64-70-62-64) gave a tough fight to Yuvraj in the fourth & final round but ended as runner-up at 20-under 260.
Twenty-four-year-old Viraj Madappa, who was overnight tied second and three off the lead, had turned the tables early on Friday with six birdies over the first 13 holes, with all aspects of his game coming together.
At that stage, Madappa, a winner on the Asian Tour, enjoyed a three-shot lead over Sandhu.The momentum shifted back in Yuvraj's favour after Viraj had a bogey on the 14th, and both he and Yuvraj made birdies on the 15th. Sandhu came up with an incredible approach shot from 99 yards on the 16th that found the hole for an eagle and brought him on level terms with Madappa.
Yuvraj ultimately made a 27-foot birdie putt on the 18th to shatter the record for the lowest winning total at Tollygunge Club, which was previously held by Md Zamal Hossain Mollah (Bengal Open 2019) and Anirban Lahiri (PGTI Players Championship 2011).
With this victory, Sandhu moved up from 23rd to second place in the PGTI Order of Merit after he picked up the winning cheque worth Rs. 8,08,250.
The veteran Rahil Gangjee, the leader after the halfway stage; secured third place at 17-under 263 following his the final round of 66.
